It’s often said that a first impression counts and that’s why a good landing page is essential if you want to impress your visitors.

Therefore, it’s important that when it comes to designing your landing page you’re ahead of the curve:

Movement

One of the biggest trends, and one that’s been around for a few years now, is movement. Techniques range from background videos to subtle motion, animated page elements and parallax scrolling as the user moves around the screen. Movement is eye catching and pulls the user in so don’t be afraid to experiment!

Visual

The core design elements of typography and contrast feature heavily in current landing page trends for both capturing the viewer’s attention and focusing that attention toward calls to action and other important page elements. These include:

  • Large fonts – using oversized typography to emphasise the most important elements, like your value proposition, ensures visitors will read the important parts and not miss them when they are scanning through your website.

  • High contrast Call To Action’s – utilise bright colours, bang on trend and on a solid white or dark background helps it jump off the page.

Interactive

Engage and interact with your visitors and you’ll get more conversions. Therefore incorporate the following into your landing page and you can’t go wrong!

Live chat and chat bots – Cut down on calls and emails and give your visitors a great customer experience with live chat in real time.

Content and forms – allow users to drill down for more information, accomplish a task, or submit a request all without leaving the page.

  • Guided tours – Give your visitors an interactive experience with a guided tour of your product or business.

  • Strategic pop-ups – make helpful, timely suggestions when appropriate for the user flow.

Social

Social proof can come in many forms, but it should always feel real, organic, and natural and can be achieved by the following:

  • Images or videos of the product: Demonstrate the product in use through pictures, videos, or illustrations it can give your users a better idea of how to use your product, or see how it works.

  • Brand bars – show your potential customers which of their peers are using your product, or even bigger name brands to help them understand how you can help their business as well.

  • Testimonials – recommendations from social media platforms or direct quotes and feedback provide a personal feeling recommendation for new visitors.

  • Free trials and tools – first hand experience can be even better than seeing or hearing about someone else’s.

Image

These current visual trends borrow from classic design principles but ensure your landing page makes a good impression to your visitors.

  • Cards and chunking: Keep content tidy, easy to read and digest, and find the information they need.

  • Two column layouts: These are great for structured content like forms by guiding the eye down the page and reducing cognitive load.

  • Flat design: Simple, two dimensional imagery often in combination with oversized typography and bright colour schemes are fun, crisp and work well across many user interfaces.

  • Drop shadows: Add subtle depth and richness.

  • Organic shapes: These feel natural and work well with many of the other trends to guide the user, add emphasis, or provide character to the landing page.

  • No (or little) navigation: Navigation can distract the user and lead them away from your call to action goas. By reducing navigation your users can focus on your call to actions leading to greater conversions

  • Colour: Ample use of white space is a staple of good design. When used in combination with other layout trends like bright snaps of colour, images and shapes, white space creates a simple, crisp, and fun look.

  • Custom visuals: Illustrations can provide great alternatives to images and can give a fresh, authentic brand personality.

  • Photography: Original photography adds richness and originality to your brand and helps you to stand out in a midst of stale stock photography.

To sum up landing pages should be updated frequently so look around for inspirational trends that might work well for your users. Keep it simple and don’t worry if you don’t get it right at your first attempt, you have plenty of time to have fun with your designs and make a great impression.
